Graduate keke napep rider!

It’s never good to look down on people’s hustles; you don’t really know what it means to them.

About him: Williams hails from Anambra State. He is a graduate of Imo state University. He was spotted going about his business for the day inside a 'keke napep tricycle'. His determination, self-driven attitude, ardent passion, humility and sense of humor were all amazing. His poise, good command in English etc. drew us closer to him .

A little chat with him before passengers came on board; he expounded the whole mystery related to his keke napep business. He graduated in 2010, though offered various jobs but his take homes were merely a meager salary. He said his last job with a marketing company here in Abuja, where he worked Monday through Saturday 7.30am to 6pm. His salary was N50, 000 per month and after deducting all expenses he has N10, 000 left as savings. He was also squatting with a friend in a one room apartment. He added that while he was with his former company, he knew what he wanted from life and still had his visions intact despite the limited access and resources.

How he started: He thought of what he could do to help him mobilize funds so as to make his vision a reality. He tried some things which didn’t work out but then “I had to swallow my pride in order to make it; I dropped my certificates, my big boy swag lol and ventured” into keke napep business, he added. I used my little savings and also borrowed from friends to procure the tricycle(all settled now). He plies between kabusa junction and Galadimawa junction Apo Abuja, conveying 4 passengers paying N100 each. This simply implies that he makes N800 on one round trip. Sometimes he does drop services as well which fetches him more money.

How he makes his profit: He fills his tank with N600 and also buys extra in a gallon which costs N1200; eats twice a day which costs N600 also taking cognizance of sundries (airtime, pumping of tire etc.). Total expenses can be estimated for N2000. Working from morning till evening 6pm to be precise, he makes an average of N8000 that is for 10 trips. It can be more if he adds to the trips.
Deducting expenses from the returns will earn him N6000 each day. Working 25days in a month will however earn him N150, 000. He has been doing this for 6 months now and can make bold to say he has his own one bedroom flat apartment.

Future plans: He was so glad he could save good money, invest and currently setting up an IT firm gradually which is his area of expertise. He works monday to friday investing his weekends on courses he's currently running.  He has bought also one keke and employed someone who rides it for him. He intends to leave the keke business as soon as he’s sure he can stand on his own, move in and run his own firm. He wishes to create jobs for helpless youths out there that are in same condition he found himself.

His inspiration: He said God is his first inspiration, then his girlfriend. My family never believed I will make it as I never brought huge amount of money home. She works with a manufacturing company. She motivates me a lot even when I was at that edge. There are times when I don’t have food; she would share hers with me. Always saying, I know you are a star, follow the pathway and never give up. She encouraged me to join this business and has always stood by me. She is so proud of me regardless. God bless her even as we are currently working towards walking down the aisle.
McFoch Gate: Swallow your pride, attempt various options. If option A doesn’t work try B, don’t forget there are still left 24 alphabets. You may not necessarily have to do a keke napep business but you can derive an inspiration therewith. Don’t relax, stop heaping blames, keep thriving, think an idea, act it, live it, love it, execute it, fail, learn, get better and be the best of your kind. However, you can also give the business a try if you so desire.

The Talented Creative Artist

This is a graduate of Sociology in University of Nigeria Nsukka. Hails from Awka Anambra state.
He is indeed fun to be with. His flair right from childhood lies with Art. His first job at Giddimint was as a result of his talent. A firm that designs prints for T shirts. He also does story boards, TV ads and presentations.

Can you tell us more about you?  I started drawing for as long as I can recall. Art kind of runs in my family, have two elder brothers who are artists, one took it up for a full time profession. He was my first inspiration and encouraged me after he discovered I could draw too. His secondary school friends who love arts made my passion for it grow as I always found myself in their midst.
A little issue, back then nobody valued arts, only Medicine, Accountancy and Law. You will be seen as joke involving yourself with arts, most especially parents who always pushed their children into the recognized courses. However I moved to study sociology in school being the fact that my brother is in Art already.  Yet my passion for it waxed more and more. I met other art lovers like Martin Okonkwo in university who was instrumental to who I am today. His younger brother taught me the principles and rules I missed as a result of not studying art, he still teaches me. He’s my mentor in art. I later discovered I could have gone into fine art to study a different branch of it since my brother majored in painting. I am happy today because what I missed, I learn from great friends and brothers.

Are you into art full time?  Well the slogan is ‘never stop drawing’.  I like being creative, it fulfills me. Presently am into it full time because it fulfills me and I am still learning. I work with Lineguage studios owned by Chris Okonkwo, it’s a safe haven for digital artists.

How are you working towards it? I am connecting with other artists here. I am with Chris Okonkwo, he taught me 70% of what I know today, he never stops learning, he never stops teaching me.

What is your goal in relation with arts? My goal is to make my drawing walk, come to life. To do that, I have to learn animation. I love imaginative drawing; I want to project our folklore as stories and animated movies too. I have met people who can’t draw but can tell stories, so my job is to bring those stories to life.

What are your challenges? Well for now the challenge comes mainly from the society. People think art is all about making portraits, painting photography and sculpture.  Art has evolved and graphic art which I major goes into games and animated movies.
Another challenge is lack of technological resources to pursue it to the extreme. There is no certified institute dedicated to training young graphic artists unlike the western world.
The societal pressure to start work and get married often lead most talented young artist and others to abandon their passion for something else.
In Nigeria, we depend on older cartoons, games and comics. We don’t have animation schools that give people certificates in animation. Most people depend on YouTube video tutorial, that’s if you can afford it.

With these challenge, how do you intend to achieve the desired?  Alongside the video tutorials, sharing ideas, we also have experienced digital artists and my mentor is one of them.

What exactly is digital art? It involves art done with digital tools, programmes like Photo shop, Corel draw, adobe illustrator after effects, zbrush to name a few.

Have you started making money from your talent? The money comes but that’s not my driving force now. If you make it your driving force, you’ll lose the talent. I am making money already. I am working with my talent not my certificate.

Where do you see yourself in the next one year? Animating my drawings or getting involved in some game production. I see myself doing better than i am now. Most things I know now, I didn’t know them by this time last year- I am growing rapidly!

What’s the plan as relates to Job creation? Well in line with Lineguage studios, we want to expand into game making movie production and animation. This will offer jobs of different kinds to youths such as Administrative, illustrators, computer programmers, sound engineers, legal jobs etc. It is going to be a big one once we go live.

Have you worked anywhere that is not art inclined?  No, strictly art. I started making money off art since secondary school. People come to me to make drawings for them. In university, they ask for party poster, valentine cards, birthday cards, etc. So why look somewhere when God has already given me something better.

Please what is your word of advice to youths out there? Hmm … All I can say is whatever you have, give it all your passion. Brace the storms that will come in the guise of criticisms. It’s all part of the hustle, once you make it, people will adore you.
Your talent will take you places your certificate won’t get you. It’s in the bible, ‘’ a man’s gift maketh way for him’’.  So keep moving no matter what. People like Kelechi Amadi Obi, Don Jazzy, Phyno etc. followed their talents and passion. These guys had it rough and yet followed their dreams. Add value to what you do because the value you attach to it is what people will use to add value to it. Above all, be proud of yourself and your talent.

McFoch Gate: Thank you so much for your time Tochukwu, you have inspired alot of people. Fellow youths, we have heard it all from another talented youth. Kindly contact us if you need his services, whatsoever. It sure pays to pursue one’s dreams as long as you are on the right path. Put your passions to work. Work as if all depends on it. Don’t relent, don’t be discouraged. All you need do is keep pushing.

Fresh & Crisp Laundry and Dry cleaning

Front view
Here is another interesting story a young entrepreneur.
The company Fresh & Crisp Laundry and Dry cleaning started November 2015  is doing tremendously well. Ik Obasi who hails from Abia state after quitting his job at a telecommunication company decided to set up a laundry and dry cleaning service.

Let’s hear him:

What inspired you?  Having applied for many jobs in the past whereby the attractive ones seem unreachable. Sometimes they will ask you (a job seeker) to pay a lump sum of money in order to secure a job you are not even sure of. After seeing all these and what youths suffer in the name of job seeking hence the desire and zeal to become a job creator burned inside of me. Even in that drive I was confused about what, where and how to start. First I began to study my environment on a wide range to identify a need that requires a solution. However I observed that we particularly need laundry & dry cleaning firm as there were only a few established ones. I thought to myself, why not start a laundry & Dry cleanings services? That was my turning point! My love for neatness, good and sharp looks also spurred me to start up one.

How did you start? I arranged with someone who is in similar field. In his firm he tutored, guided and directed me on the nitty-gritty of the job. I had to watch the process, see them do it and I learnt. This lasted 2 to 3 days and that was it. The crux of the whole matter was starting my own company and that was November 2015. Next is creating awareness which is targeted at getting clients from my locality first.

What is your staff strength? When I started last November, I was doing all by myself. Then by December patronage started to increase. That was when I got one staff that was solely in charge of the ironing. Time later, I also got a receptionist for festive period to assist. But presently it’s just me, one staff and we are doing great.

What were the requirements?  These include and are not limited to:
·         Office or a space with backroom
·         Washing machine- Optional (can do manual for a start)
·         Furniture & Fittings
·         Painting
·         Fliers, banner etc.
·         Receipt booklet
·         Company registration @CAC
·         Built padded table for ironing
·         Cellophane bag for packaging
·         Hangers
·         Detergent
·         Water
·         Spreading area
·         Steam iron box
·         Fan or Air conditioner
·         Generator(optional for a start)
·         Etc.

What is the average startup cost? Well it depends on your area but it will not cost more than 400,000 naira. It can be lesser if you start in a compound first before moving into an office. If also you do a thorough manual wash before procuring washing machine, these will cut down the initial required capital. The main thing is to start and if you must, start from somewhere.

Please explain the process:  First I receive cloth from a client. This is followed by drafting a receipt indicating a 70% advance payment, details of the cloth and pick up date.
Tagging: After that I take a picture of the cloth or clothes transfer to the laptop, save against the client’s name and tag them. This is to for easy identification and to guard against sheer mix up.
Sorting: I sort clothes that have similar colors taking cognizance of the ones that run colors. Those are to be washed separately to avoid any cross contact.

How do you build your clientele?
Honestly speaking, it is not easy sourcing and maintaining clients especially at this on stage. This is because considering the fact that you are not the sole launderer and drycleaner domiciled in that area. In actual fact, competition is inevitable especially in the society where people are working so hard to earn a living.
With all these, I had to cut down my own price especially being a starter in the field to attract customers. When others charge N600 for a pair of suit and N400 for a shirt, mine became N500 and N300 respectively while maintaining my standard and excellence. This fetched me certain amount of clients who till date patronize my company and I ensure I render excellent customer service cum management, thanking them for their patronage while craving their indulgence them to call again.

What is your selling point?  Mostly in terms of pricing, I give discounts to new customers and also set a standard pick up time for 48 working hours. I tend to convince a prospective client and give them reason why they should patronize my company, assuring them on excellent services; prompt pick up/delivery, affordable services etc. I must say, those who did never regretted doing so as I keep getting recommendation.

At what margin do you make your profit and How has it been so far? Well for a starter like me, it’s quite impressive. The cost of washing suit is N300 or less and shirt is N150 so for a pair of suit and a shirt I make N200 and N150 respectively. So if I was 300 pair of suits and shirts in a month I will make N60, 000 and N45, 000 respectively totaled N105, 000.

What are your challenges so far?
·         Non steady patronage: Sometimes turn up will go up and down.  So my hands are on the desk mapping out means of attracting clients.
·         Low pricing: Prospective customers who have never tried your service may turn out to price you very low. What I do? I calm down and explain the modus operandi of washing suits, why the price differ, why it requires steaming instead of direct heating as in the case of shirts and others. By the time I finished narrating, they will be fully convinced and assured of the services I rendering.
·         Power outage: What I do is to time myself, work with and take advantage of the power supply in my area. So far the power outage is not frequent but few times it happens, I resort to the generator as a backup.

What is your marketing Strategy?  I have already printed fliers to distribute. Also I plan to meet establishments; company’s, houses etc. and introduce my company to them.

Aspiration:  I am working towards becoming the one stop dry cleaning company worldwide staring from Ikotun in Lagos and its environment.
I also intend to expand with time.

Advice to aspiring youths:  All I can say is Patience!  You need a whole of it while starting up, not just laundry and Dry Cleaning Company but every business requires patience.  For the first three months, ensure you have a fall back capital set out from the initial capital used in starting the business, no amount is small. It’s a step by step growth. I can recall I made gain of N40, 000 the first month and it kept increasing. I was fulfilled and said to myself, wow I made it!

 *****

Me: Thank you Ik, it was a wonderfully inspiring moment with you. This will go a long way educating youths who want to set up a laundry firm. McFochGate wishes you the best in your endeavours.
For those residing in Ikotun area of Lagos state(see address on the banner), Fresh & Crisp Laundry and dry cleaning services hereby requests your kind patronage. He will surely render good services. Let’s encourage a hardworking citizen like us.

**For further consultation, questions, advisory services towards starting up a business etc.Want to share your experience, stories to inspire others, kindly contact us. We will arrange a meeting with you.
Dear Youths, Dear aspiring Young Entrepreneurs, Dear All, If I can do it, if IK can do it, if others can do it, then  you can do it. It’s a matter of telling yourself I can! You don’t have to wait and sit for things to happen, for that job in your fantasy to manifest. Most times it doesn’t work that way.

**Do you know that you may be gainfully employed, earning big bucks and yet unfulfilled? You may have that innate unrest, passion and quest for entrepreneurship; why not take the bold step. What if this job is taken away from you and another one doesn’t show up fast, what would you do to survive?  Do you know you can be employed and also be an employer of labor, it’s about priority and time management.

**If you want to be among people who will create jobs for others why not dare your fear. McFochGate is also here to guide you through. So many great people solved a problem by looking the most feared in the eyes and challenging them. First what to do? Identify a need, think up an idea, take a bold step and move into action. As a starter, you may have to be the CEO, receptionist, marketer, accountant, etc. depending on the nature of the job. Most of it all encourage yourself and don’t encourage any negative talks. Don’t think of the return first, it will eventually come but build first.

**Mingle with people who will motivate and inspire you especially people who have passed through that stage to get to an enviable height. Learn from your mistakes, learn from their own mistakes as well, and don’t wait until it happens to you. Above all keep growing, keep learning, be customer centric, ensure excellent service, maintain high integrity, be humble, be hardworking, cut down your sleep, read entrepreneurship books, research, surf the net, wear a smile always, look good, be what you sell, keep strategizing, and don’t stop.
I also advise you to maintain a good customer relationship and ensure you get proper feedback from your customer, by this you will decipher their needs, expectations, comments and how they feel about your services. This will enable you to improve further.

God being your help, you will get there.

Cheers!

The Enayon's Farm!

Fish Feeding

Story of a young Nigerian graduate who is into cat fish farming. Enayon Anthony who believes he can earn his living through what he's doing. He has attempted other things as a normal youth but still not fulfilled.
I spotted him long time ago on social media doing his thing and I admired his guts. He totally carved his own niche rather than settle where he won't be fulfilled at. His passion is to contribute a great deal in the lives of youths at large having looked at the unemployment rate in the society. His vision was totally borne out of his passion, crave and love for Agriculture. He calls what he's doing F3 that is Fun, Food and Fund. It pays indeed a lot to love what you are doing.

 Now follow me...

Enayon:  "When i was starting off, some of my mates felt i was being foolish, backward and so on. Sounds like: "you want to be a fish seller, a farmer, this local thing?" Well i didn’t stop.
I started cat fish farming with earth pond in 2009/2010 and the start wasn't that big.  I did a market research, created market for myself and that was it. I bought fingerlings from a friend and also sourced feed for them. I kept moving in spite of some unavoidable challenges. Sometimes the fish may die especially if they are not well fed, so i had to ensure i procure nutritional feed as it takes a fingerling 6 months to grow, the size where they can be harvested and sold. I had to put up a routine which was constant watch and thorough check on the fish thereby making them my friends. In fact I loved what i was doing and i enjoy feeding them. During harvest time, i call on the buyers and make sales.

Today i have established a big cat fish farm with 5 workers who i pay.  I now have a lot of customers, some i got through referrals. This means i got to a level where i don't have to scout for customers no more; they now come to my farm and buy the fish.
The interesting part is that those people who felt i was being unwise to take up this business are now marveled at the results i have gotten and some are coming to learn, wow!

I must say i have continued to grow, no regrets. I don't feel i miss anything out there. In fact i don’t think or wish to be someone else or where they are. There is a lot of money in fish farming. It is profitable selling catfish compared to farm products; farm grown fishes are less expensive than river fish.  Currently i do export fish and seriously working towards further expansion.
My goal is to become one of the largest in West Africa."
Water supply

Me: Thank you so much for your time and details. My people, is this not encouraging?

It was great meeting and chatting with him. What an average youth wouldn't think of, that was what i saw him doing. He's dogged, committed, resilient and focused he is in what he's doing. He currently runs an empowerment programme for youths who are willing to venture into cat fish farming and can be contacted for free consultation.
The aim is to create jobs, mold employers of labor and make youths become their own bosses. You do not have to pay a dime. All you need is contact him and here you go.  This is geared towards bringing about a positive change in the lives of African youths. A situation whereby one youth is empowered, he goes empowering at least 4 other youths and the chain continues by creating a network.
Fish Harvesting

I hereby encourage youths who have passion in Agriculture especially fish farming to check this out. First get all information and training it may require, then do market feasibility study to know how saleable your product will be in your area and beyond. When you identify your customers, consider the nearness of your pond to them as well. After you have put all in place, It does not cost much to start, you can start small even right there in your compound or somewhere by the corner so as not to inconvenience neighbors. You can inbox me if you need further consultation so i can connect you to him.
If you have other passion, ideas but don't know how to go about starting it, please feel free to contact me for further counsel and guidance.
I must say, starting is never easy but in the long run as far as you stayed focused, you would be glad you did.
Take the bold step, take the necessary risk, dare to be different and follow through. Let every challenge you go through inspire you, learn from them. Let it drive you to pursue your goal. The profit may not start rolling immediately but eventually would. Just have some little patience and grow through it.

To others who are in other sectors doing their thing, be inspired by this and keep moving don't stop. Love what you are doing and be proud of it. Maintain a good standard with no compromise. Sell yourself and what you do.  Improve yourself daily via reading, researching, attending seminars, etc. Most especially do not compete with anybody. Don't think they have outran you, heck no! Every man has his own course so run yours.
Start today, your light will dazzle and the whole world will see you someday and soon.

Just take your chances.

Dear Government, investors, business moguls, organizations reading this. We implore you to support, partner, promote our dear Nigerian youths who are on this course. Channel resources, grants and loans to motivate them. They have taken a great step to start from the scratch.
It is not enough making budgets that are not practical. We still import most of the things we use in this country. The youths have decided to bridge this pitiable gap.
This is a call to help Nigerian youths thriving to succeed in a good way.

Peace!
